Product Feed Optimization: 10 Rules Google Checks
Your product feed is the bridge between your store and Google Shopping. A poorly optimized feed leads to disapproved products, wasted ad spend, and lost sales. Here are the 10 rules Google checks most strictly.
1. Title Accuracy
Product titles must accurately describe the product. Include brand name, product type, key attributes (color, size, material). Don't stuff keywords — Google penalizes overly promotional titles.
2. Price Consistency
The price in your feed must exactly match the price on your product page. This includes currency and any required taxes. Mismatches are one of the fastest ways to get products disapproved.
3. Availability Status
If a product is out of stock on your site, your feed must reflect that. Google's crawlers verify availability, and mismatches trigger disapprovals.
4. GTIN (Barcode) Requirements
Google requires GTINs (UPC, EAN, ISBN) for all products that have them. If your product has a manufacturer barcode, you must include it. Custom or handmade products are exempt.
5. Image Quality
Product images must be at least 100x100 pixels (250x250 for apparel). No watermarks, no promotional text overlays, no placeholder images. The main image should show the product on a white or transparent background.
6. Product Description
Descriptions should be unique, informative, and match what's on your product page. Don't copy manufacturer descriptions verbatim — this can trigger quality filters.
7. Product Category
Use Google's product taxonomy to categorize your items. Incorrect categorization leads to poor ad placement and potential disapprovals.
8. Shipping Information
Shipping costs must be accurate and up-to-date. If you offer free shipping, make sure it's reflected in the feed. Hidden shipping costs trigger policy violations.
9. Landing Page Quality
Each product URL in your feed must lead to a working product page that matches the feed data. Broken links, redirects to the homepage, or pages with different information will get products disapproved.
10. Required Attributes
Depending on your product category, certain attributes are mandatory: condition, brand, color, size, gender, age_group, etc. Missing required attributes = automatic disapproval.
Automation Is Key
Manually maintaining feed compliance across hundreds or thousands of products is unsustainable. Use automated feed sync tools that keep your product data in sync with your store and catch issues before Google does.
